Every Monday during football season we hear from the ‘Monday Morning Quarterbacks’ who second-guess the moves made during the games of the previous day. Today, however, is special. On ‘Super Monday’ we not only get to hear from the armchair quarterbacks, but from the armchair Creative Directors as well. Everyone will have an opinion not only on the play the 49ers called on fourth and goal with the game on the line but just as many will have an opinion on if godaddy.com went too far. Why was there no breakout Betty White Snickers commercial and was Willem Dafoe a scary Satan?

I’d like to take a different tack and pass along my observations on the armchair creatives and broadcasters. I spent the game set up for multi-media. TV, laptop open to Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. iPhone and iPad at the ready. As the game unfolded I tweeted and posted about spots I liked, the same as anyone else. As time passed I became fascinated by the tweets and posts, the vast majority concerning the commercials and broadcast and not the game itself. I expected that, most of my connections are media related. What I didn’t expect was the level of criticism directed at both the commercials and the broadcast.

I was especially fascinated by the local TV reporters who couldn’t tweet fast enough their critique of CBS’s handling of the power outage. That wasn’t Lara Logan reporting from Afghanistan, you were looking at mostly former football players thrown into a situation no one remotely expected would happen. To stoop to their level for a moment, it made them look envious and unprofessional. Watching the game is probably the closest they’ll ever come to a network gig.

The most entertaining part of the game on Twitter and Facebook was the power outage. The comments and tweets were hilarious. My favorite was a re-tweet: ‘If you liked it then you should have put a back-up generator on it’. Maybe next year someone will buy a spot and just run tweets in it. That should get the armchair creatives going.

I hope I haven’t gone against my premise by criticizing the critics. I’m sure I’ll get criticized for that.

Look at the bright side. Baseball season is just around the corner and people can second-guess managers every day!

Any time you try to communicate a thought to a person or group of people you should follow the first and most important commandment of communication: Know Thy Audience. Your kids don’t need to hear how brake pads need to be replaced. They need to know you took the time to get the car fixed so you can take them to the beach. The same applies to business communication. Don’t get caught up in jargon. People don’t need or want the technological process that produced your new widget. They want to know how this new widget will make their lives and/or jobs better. Always think of your audience and tell them what THEY want to know. If they want technical specifics believe me, they’ll ask.

In the world of advertising Super Tuesday reminds us that the next political windows will begin 60 days prior to election day (September 8th) and 45 days prior to a September primary. The political window, explained quickly, means that campaigns must, by law, be given the lowest unit rates by TV and Radio stations. This prompts stations to raise rates and be less flexible during these times lest a campaign come in and demand the same treatment as long-time advertisers. It also prices smaller advertisers out of the market. Circumstances can vary from state to state based on the races. While Massachusetts may not be a swing state in the Presidential contest, it is expected to host the nastiest Senate race in the country, which means LOTS of campaign ads. This can be problematic in October, the first month of the fourth quarter and key advertising time in a consumer world where the holiday season starts earlier every year. The advice? Plan, plan, and plan. Look ahead. Look for alternatives and consult someone who knows how these windows work and can keep them from crashing down on your fingers.

This is our first blog post. So please, be gentle. Before flying headlong into the future I’d like to comment on the creation of Waverider Communications. In order to better serve our clients, both current and future (you’re out there, you just don’t know it yet), break out from the pack, make a statement, plant our flag and any other old business cliché that comes to mind we decided to re-launch RSA Communications. Why Waverider? Simple. I like to ride waves. I believe it provides a nice symmetry between my two passions; advertising and the ocean. That plus Bad Golf Swing Communications really didn’t sound all that good. The process of creating a new image from creation of the name through the email announcement that was sent out this past Tuesday took nine weeks. That includes website, logo and all collateral materials. The reason I bring this up is to make the point that if we can do that for us we can do that for you. Big corporations can take up to a year to create a new logo. A logo that was watered down by committee after committee and looks like an incomprehensible squiggle. Yes squiggle. It’s a highly technical term. To be blunt, we take the layers of corporate wastefulness out of the equation and deliver work that helps you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. I look forward to providing interesting and thought provoking posts that will sometimes leave you thinking, sometimes leave you shaking your head but more often than not leave you with a smile. Because as my personal hero and great comedic actor of the 20th century Bugs Bunny once said, “Why take life seriously? You’ll never get out of it alive.”

Have a great weekend,

Rob

What do Advertising, Public Relations, Social Media and Marketing all have in common? They are all ways to communicate. At one time each of these disciplines stood alone with very little overlap. Today the lines are blurred. To help businesses navigate through these interesting times a new type of company is needed.

Waverider creates, produces and places advertising. But we’re not an ad agency. Waverider crafts a client’s image and then promotes that image to the media as well as the general public. But we’re not a PR firm. Waverider creates and manages social media identities and maintains blogs for clients. But we’re not a social media company.

Waverider Communications is a company that does all of the above and more because we are a COMMUNICATIONS company. It is our mission and passion to help our clients achieve their goals by providing the best and most creative ways for them to communicate their message. As you look through our website you will discover the many ways we can help your business.

Businesses have Accountants, Attorneys, Bankers and Insurance Agents as key counselors who provide valuable advice in their areas of expertise. Shouldn’t you also have an expert to create, deliver and manager your message?

We’re Waverider Communciations. We’re a communications company. We’d like to be your communications partner.
